Biography	Il a grandi à Mahalat Nasr au Gouvernorat de Beheira, a reçu une éducation musulmane dès son plus jeune âge, a continué ses études à la mosquée Ahmadite à Tanta, et entra enfin à l'université al-Azhar en 1866. Il a travaillé dans l'enseignement, puis a été nommé rédacteur dans le journal gouvernemental al-Waqāʾiʿ al-miṣriyya. Après sa participation à la révolte Urabi, il a été emprisonné pour trois mois, puis forcé de s'exiler, d'abord au Liban puis en France où il rejoint al-Afghani, eux deux éditaient un journal révolutionnaire islamique, al-ʿUrwa al-wuṯqā. Il est retourné après à Beyrouth où il a enseigné et a écrit des livres. À son retour en Égypte, Abduh a commencé sa carrière dans la justice et il a d'abord été nommé juge dans un tribunal national de première instance, avant d'être nommé juge dans la cour d'appel. Il est devenu enfin mufti, un titre qu'il a conservé jusqu'à sa mort à Alexandrie.
Biography	نشأ في محلة نصر بالبحيرة، وتعلم بالجامع الأحمدي بطنطا، ثم بالأزهر، وعمل في التعليم، وتولى تحرير الوقائع المصرية، وشارك في مناصرة الثورة العرابية، فسجن ثلاثة أشهر للتحقيق، ونفي إلى بيروت، وسافر إلى باريس، وأصدر مع جمال الدين الأفغاني جريدة العروة الوثقى، وعاد إلى بيروت فاشتغل بالتدريس والتأليف، وسمح له بدخول مصر، فعاد وتولى منصب القضاء، ثم جعل مستشارا في محكمة الاستئناف، فمفتيا للديار المصرية، واستمر إلى أن توفي بالإسكندرية، ودفن بالقاهرة.
Biography	He was born in Lower Egypt and spent his childhood in Mahallat Nasr in the Beheira Governorate. At a young age, he memorized the Quran and in 1862 was sent to theological school in Tanta. He left and proceeded to Azhar Mosque in Cairo to continue his religious education, where he grew interested in the natural sciences and devoted himself to mysticism. There, he met Sayyid Djamal al-Din al Afghani who just arrived to Egypt and would become his master. After graduating, he was appointed a teacher in the Dar al-`Ulum and was later appointed as chief editor of the official gazette al-Waqāʾiʿ al-miṣriyya. After the suppression of Urabni Pasha’s rebellion, he was exiled to Beirut and then to Paris. In 1889 he was allowed to return to Cairo and was appointed as a judge. In 1899, he attained the position of state mufti, which he held until his death in Alexandria.
